I have been experimenting with using technology in conjunction with my teaching for the past several years, in part because I am always looking to see if there is something that could make what I do more efficient, and in part because new technologies allow me to teach interdisciplinary material more effectively. When I got to Reed I began to explore what resources the campus offered for helping students with their writing using technology. These are harder to link to online, but we will talk about some of these resources on the third day of the workshop. During my second year, I learned how to make webpages when we had a workshop
(like this one!) for Hum 110 led by David Silverman. Some of the pages
I made at that time as still available on the Hum
110 Tech server. In addition to using webpages I have started using Powerpoint as a way to augment my Hum 110 lectures, and for giving papers at conferences. Here are some examples of Powerpoint presentations I have given: Example 1, Example 2. My work on teaching & technology has begun to filter into my research as well. For the past two years, I have been working as the Academic Director for AMERICAN PASSAGES, a multimedia series on American Literature in its cultural context that it being produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting. This project combines a number of the above strategies: it has an extensive virtual archive and slide show software that is similar to what you can do with power point in the classroom. You can see the mockups for this project here. In addition the curriculum materials employ an electronic writing and editing software developed by WW Norton & Co. called Connect.Net. |
