Lecture Sheets (PDF): Dennis Oppenheim | Dirt Studio | Lucy Orta | Rural Studio | Scraphouse | SIMPARCH
The goal of this course is to:
The artists/architects work we will discus and meet work within the zone of Sculpture/Landscape/Architecture. They focus on the creation of space, place and green building materials.
The first part of the course will focus on built architectural forms.
We will read Krause’s “Sculpture in the Expanded Field” and
From margin to center: the spaces of installation art by Julie H. Reiss to understand the history of Installation and architectural projects as works of art from the 1960 to the present. Martin Heiderger’s “Building Dwelling Thinking” will be central to the idea of making place.
The second half of the class will focus on the issues of ecology and landscape.
Between Rachael Carson’s “Silent Spring” published in 1962 and the first Earth Day celebration in 1970, environmental consciousness was changed forever. Artist/architects have been at the for-front of that change.
In order to understand this field, we will first read scholarship from the 1960 to the present that defined earthworks, land and Installation art. The text Land and Environmental Art will provide a guide for you. Additionally numerous readings and web sights have been gathered so that you can begin to see how the “Intersection” of these fields and innovative ideas are changing the way we think and make our world.
William McDonough’s Cradle to Cradle will give us a new perspective on Eco-building practices.
Please note if you wish to take this class you must:
Have woodshop skills and or welding skills.
Have taken one or more sculpture class before and know basic handling of sculpture materials.
Have read, “Sculpture in the expanded field”
Have taken courses in postmodern theory,
and be ready to work really hard.
We will consider the language of Architectural space in order to design a “Hospitable Space” or a space for gathering and human interaction. We will closely consider the phenomilogical language of materials and become versed in green and reused materials.
The class will visit “Green Building Services” and will purchase materials at the “Rebuilding Center”. You will build a model of this project or in the case of portable or smaller form the actual piece. Models will be made prior o the final work as well as research, drawing and surveys to understand the issues you are addressing.
The internationally renowned artist LUCY ORTA will be with us for several days in early FEBUARY. Her lecture, discussion of works done will give us first hand knowledge of architectonic sculpture that is also highly politically charged.
Our readings will cover the work of Steven Holl, Alan Werner, and Siaham Aramajani, Alan Wexner, Andrea Zittel as well as the architectural philosophy of Martin Heidegger in his essay “Building Dwelling Thinking”.

We will focus on the tradition of landscape architecture and the ecological impact of making a work upon the earth. The studio component will be an analysis of the East Meadow of campus and the possible implications of development. The class will draw the landscape, consider the natural and man-made features, discuss future development with those who use the space and conduct a design Charrett. Your final proposal for the meadow will include a written statement about future development, a drafted and or drawn proposal and a scale model.
The class will visit Zenger Farms to look at the landscape design and utilization of the earth. Each professional will give us a lecture on his or her profession as well as insights into thinking through the problems of the East Meadow.
The readings for this section will include the Ian Hamilton Finily, Mel Chin, Buster Simpson, Agnes Denis.
Resources such as Bruce Mau Design and the Institute for Massive Change, Dirt Studio and McDoungh partners will provide a reference base.

Since each project will be rather large in scale and scope, assisting each other or collaborative projects are encouraged. Because-
“Collaborative design has the synthetic power to create layered places.”
(Bruce Mau)
