The very best book on the imperial Forbidden City is by Wu Zhuoyun, Palaces of the Forbidden City, trans Ng Mou-Sang, Chan Sitwai and Puwen Lee (New York: Viking Penguin, 1987). It's out of print, and unfortunately, not available through Summit. You can borrow it, however, through WorldCat.
