Course Description

This course explores Chinese cultural identity as expressed in global economies of art production and performance.   We will study a dynamic field of artistic activity that touches on many central issues informing cultural identity in Maoist-era (1949-1976) and contemporary China:   globalization and transnational formations; political ideology and censorship; the body, gender, and sexuality; the impact of market forces and art-world institutions on the art scenes in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Along the way, we will also question the status of the image:   how is identity differently shaped and expressed in painting, photography, sculpture, and experimental arts such as performance and video?   Participants will conceive and design a thematically-based exhibition catalog essay of works produced since the mid-twentieth century, and in addition, will co-curate the Cooley Gallery CHINA URBAN show opening in late March.
