| For the exhibition at the Laura Russo Gallery in 2000 I created Photo lithographic prints of human Stem Cells tissue and the blastinocast. Stem Cells are the first formations of our organs. Currently these cells are being harvested to regenerate tissue and cure illness. I was very attracted to images of Stem Cells because they look very much like a spinal column, which is infact what our organs are alined with. I became interested in repeating the image in the Stem Cells prints and the recent series, Cellular Tissue. For these works Ihave taken images of plant tissue and manipulated them numerous times then printed and aligned them to mimic the thin section mounts used for magnification. Their duplication both through the printing process and replication within the image, is self referential to the infinite repetition of cell growth, each appearing similar but always subtly different. In the process of working with all of these images I have manipulated the original photograph significantly. After scanning and adjusting each image I made large negatives which were exposed on to Photo Lithograph plates. I drew into the images on the Lithograph plates, printed them, and drew into the final print extensively. My choice of each image was based on my interest in the graphic forms and the information they carried. The prints were made at Mahaffey Fine Art in Portland. The books were constructed and bound while I was an artist in residence at the Womens Studio Workshop in New York. |
