Cortical rotation in Xenopus

The yolk platelets in the vegetal hemisphere of a fertilized egg were dyed with a pattern of spots. The egg was then embedded in gelatin and imaged from below. The movie starts with the spots illuminated with fluorescent optics. Note direction of movement = away from 5 o’clock. Then the room lights come on and the embryo cleaves, gastrulates, and finally forms the neural groove very close to 5 o’clock. Gastrulation in Xenopus

A confocal microscope was used to make optical sections of fixed embryos at different stages of gastrulation. The images were then morphed into a movie using Morph software.
