Zhong Yi was a musician in the State of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period. He was captured during a war by the army of the State of Zheng and was subsequently sent to the State of Jin as a captive. King of Jin, who found it curious when one day he saw a captive wearing a strange southern style cap, asked Zhong Yi about his native place and profession. Learning that he was a musician, the king asked him to play a tune. Zhong Yi played a Chu tune. This story is recorded in the Zuozhuan, or Zuo's Commentary to the Spring and Autumn Annals. Zhuang Xi was from the State of Yue, but became a high official in the State of Chu. One day when he fell ill, the king wondered if Zhuang Xi, a man of poor status in Yue who acquired nobility and wealth in the State of Chu, was still homesick. The king sent someone to spy on him, and learned that Zhuang Xi was singing a Yue song. This is a story from Shiji, or the Record of the Grand Historian.
