Han Xin/Han Hsin, as a young man, was generally despised and in straitened circumstances. A washerwoman took pity on him and fed him for several weeks. When he promised to repay her, she indignantly denied that she expected any reward. Later Han became one of the best generals of Emperor Gaozu of Han and was enfeoffed as Lord of Huaiyin. See Shiji 93. For Burton Watson's translation of Han's biography, see Records of the Grand Historian of China, I: 208-32.
