Education
I got my BA, with a congratulatory first, and a gratuitous MA, from Oxford, England, in 1990, and my PhD from Penn in Philadelphia in 1994. I was an Assistant Professor at Wellesley College, near Boston, for the year after that (1994-95). I was an Assistant Professor at Reed from 1995 until I earned tenure in 2001; in 2005 I was named to the Walter Mintz Chair of Classics, and in 2007 I was appointed to Full Professor. I was on leave for the academic year 2008-09, in order to serve as the Professor-in-Charge of the new Intercollegiate center for Classical Studies program in Catania, Sicily, but am now back in the swing of things.
