Denise Hare came to Reed in 1992. She received her B.A. from Carleton College and her Ph.D. from Stanford University. Her teaching at Reed has included introductory economics, courses in the economics department theory and methods core, and various electives in areas such as the economics of transition in China and other Asian countries, the economics of development, labor economics, and economic demography. Her research focuses on rural economic development in China and Vietnam, addressing questions about labor markets and human resources, property rights in land, and local public finance. Current work explores the impact of China’s rural enterprise privatization on the provision of public goods and services.
