Also appearing in the ninth scroll, Kuixing is said to have attempted suicide by drowning, only to be rescued by a sea creature that is sometimes depicted as holding him above the waves under his right foot. Kuixing became the stellar deity of examinations, worshipped by scholars immediately before they entered the provincial and imperial examination halls. The brush he bears dots successful examinations with vermilion ink to indicate they passed. In this particular scene, a boy bears an ink stone as the man who is dreaming hands the monk an unknown text or certificate. | |
