Due Date: Saturday, April 20th, 2001, 5 p.m. in the Faculty mailboxes in Eliot.

The format and length of the paper will be determined by your conference leader.

1. Discuss the ways in which Christian religious commitments demand a rethinking of familial commitment in Matthew, The Martyrdom of Saints Perpetua and Felicitas, and Anthony

2. Compare the ways in which the narrative promises developed in Genesis are fulfilled in the apocalyptic books that end the Old Testament (Daniel) and the New Testament (Revelation).

3. Compare the ways that the religious interpretation of Jewish history inform the understanding of contemporary events in Josephus and either Mathew, Isaiah or John

4. Discuss the prologue of either John, the Tractate Avot or The Golden Ass. In what ways do these prologues fit and and fail to fit with the central themes of these texts.

5. Compare the ways in which subjects of the Roman empire depict Roman figures of authority. Choose two or three of the following: John of Patmos (Revelation), Apostle Paul, Felicitas, Josephus, or Matthew.

[Note: The next two paper topics require you to write about objects on display at the exhibit. You conference leader will have information about the hours/days that the exhibit will be open.]

6. Discuss Roman attitudes to foreign peoples and places in late Antiquity as these attitudes are represented in the formal qualities and genres of the Egyptian objects at the exhibit

7. Discuss the recurrent androgyny in the third and fourth century representations of deities and their followers in the exhibit. How is this androgyny communicated, and what social or aesthetic issues does it address?

8. In consultation with your conference leader, write on a topic of your own devising.
