Humanities 110 Paper Topic #2

Due Date: Saturday, March 11th, 2000, 5 p.m. in the Faculty mailboxes in Eliot.

Length: 1500 words.

Write on one of the following questions:

1. Compare the use of myth in the Ara Pacis Augustae and Ovid's treatment of myth in the Arachne episode (Metamorphoses, Book 6, lines 1-152).

2. Analyze and compare the relief of the Apotheosis of Antonius Pius and Empress Faustine, AD 161 (Elsner #13) with the Adlocutio relief of the Arch of Constantine, ca. 315 AD (Elsner #7).

3. Is the Pythagoras myth at the end of the Metamorphoses intended to provide a coherent expression of Ovid's philosophy?

4. In Tacitus' representation of the imperial office, where does the boundary between public and private life lie and how is it manifested?

5. Analyze Tacitus' representation of models of female power in the imperial household. You might want to consider such figures as Agrippina the Younger, Livia, Aggrippina the Elder, or Messalina.

6. Compare the picture of the relationship between husband and wife in the Roman inscription known as the "Laudatio Turiae" ("Praise of Turia") http://www.uky.edu/ArtsSciences/Classics/wlgr/wlgr-publiclife168.html with the analysis of the Roman Family in Chapter 7 of Garnsey and Saller.

7. In consultation with your conference leader, write on a topic of your own devising.
