Corbett
and Goldhammer Collaborative Summer
Grants
|
The Corbett and Goldhammer Grants provide opportunities for
students to work in a collaborative partnership with a
faculty member during the summer on a policy issue of
interest to them. The emphasis in these grants is that the
student and faculty member operate as partners in a common
research project. These grants fund both the student and
faculty member for the summer. They succeeds the more
narrowly focused Hewlett Grants in International and
Comparative Policy, but certainly embraces the types of
projects that were funded under the Hewlett. A full list of
Hewlett Projects is available at the end of this
manual.

The
Public Policy Workshop
|
The Public Policy Workshop is located in Eliot 110. It is
managed by the Department of Political Science. It is
primarily a research laboratory, but also serves as a
computer facility, teaching facility and gathering place for
social scientists. The PPW has 14 Macintosh computers
(including 8 new Power PC 6500/250s) plus a file server
system. The Macs are connected to the College mainframe
computer system, including the Library card catalog. Each
Mac is equipped with telephone lines, as well as a "hands
free" headset, making it feasible to do original survey
research with direct data input utilizing a program written
by the Computer Development Lab. (Students can access the
vast archives of the Inter-university Consortium for
Political and Social Research of the University of Michigan
(ICPSR) through the Reed Sociology Department's Social
Science Research Center.)
The
PPW is not an IRC, and is not a part of the College computer
system. It is, therefore, not open to anyone, but only to
authorized users who have been issued keys. Keys are
authorized by the Director, on application to the PPW
Student Manager, whose office is inside E-110. Eligible key
holders are only political science majors, faculty, and
other social science students and faculty.
The
PPW is open 24 hours on an honors system basis.
Occasionally, the PPW is used for other purposes: for
classes, for registration and for Development Office
phonathons. Students should consult the bulletin board as to
times the PPW is available for use. Lois Hobbs, the HSS
Division Secretary, handles all special scheduling of the
PPW. Nevertheless, special scheduling is infrequent, so the
PPW remains a good place to work on papers, etc., without
interruption.
We are always looking for interesting suggestions for
speakers, and inviting expert lecturers is another way of
supplementing your curriculum. Over the course of the year,
faculty participating in the ICPS program do invite experts
to speak at the College or organize a lecture series. In
1996-97, for example, the Departments of Economics and
Political Science organized a lecture series on Political
and Economic Transition in Eastern Europe. We flew in
scholars from across the U. S. and Europe, as well as
important government officials from eastern Europe to
discuss contemporary politics there. If you have particular
interests, you should definitely suggest these to ICPS
faculty.
