Typing Help for Windows 

Word help

Use the following key combinations to insert special characters in Microsoft Word:

à, è, ì, ò, ù - À, È, Ì, Ò, Ù CTRL+` (ACCENT GRAVE), the letter 
á, é, í, ó, ú, ý - Á, É, Í, Ó, Ú, Ý CTRL+' (APOSTROPHE), the letter
â, ê, î, ô, û Â, Ê, Î, Ô, Û  CTRL+^ (CARET), the letter
ã, ñ, õ Ã, Ñ, Õ  CTRL+~ (TILDE), the letter
ä, ë, ï, ö, ü, ÿ Ä, Ë, Ï, Ö, Ü, ue  CTRL+: (COLON), the letter

You can also insert foreign characters by clicking Word's "Insert" menu, clicking "Symbol" and choosing the font "Lucida Sans Unicode". Choose the subset you need. From here you can insert and create shortcut keys for characters.


US-International English Keyboard Setup

Using the US-International keyboard allows you to keep the QWERTY keyboard layout you're used to, while providing "modifier" keys to type non-English characters.
You may need your Windows CD to complete the setup:

1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel   1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel
2. Open Keyboard Control Panel   2. Open Regional and Language Options
3. Click the Languages tab   3. Click the Languages tab
4. If you want to be able to switch between your current keyboard layout and the International layout, click Add and add a language such as English (Canada).   4. Click the Details button
5. Click the Properties button   5. Click the Add button
6. Choose United States-International   6. Under Keyboard layout/IME, choose United States-International.
7. Choose how to switch between multiple keyboard layouts at the bottom.   7. Click Key Settings to see options for switching between keyboard layouts

Creating International Characters

When you press the APOSTROPHE (') key, QUOTATION MARK (") key, ACCENT GRAVE (`) key, TILDE (~) key, ACCENT CIRCUMFLEX key, or CARET (^) key, nothing appears on the screen until you press a second key. If you press one of the letters designated as eligible to receive an accent mark, the accented version of the letter appears. If you press the key of a character that is not eligible to receive an accent mark, two separate characters appear. For the literal punctuation ',", etc, hit the punctuation key then the space bar.

Keyboard Layout Setup

Be able to switch to a keyboard layout so you can type as if you have a foreign keyboard.
You may need your Windows CD to complete the setup:

Windows 95/98/ME   Windows XP
1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel   1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel
2. Open Keyboard Control Panel   2. Open Regional and Language Options
3. Click the Languages tab   3. Click the Languages tab
4. Click Add and choose the language you want   4. Click the Details button
5. Click the Properties button   5. Click the Add button
6. The layout you want should already be selected. Click OK.   6. Under Input Language, choose the language you want. Click OK.
7. Choose how to switch between multiple keyboard layouts at the bottom.   7. Click Key Settings to see options for switching between keyboard layouts.

In XP, view layouts onscreen by opening Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Accessibility -> On-screen Keyboard.

Character Map

Use the Character Map to cut and paste special characters into your document. Click Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Character Map or click Start -> Run and type "charmap". Choose the font you want from the top. Double click the character you want, or use the Select button, then click Copy. Use the Paste option of your program to paste the character into your document.

If you don't have Character Map, install it from your Windows CD by clicking Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Add/Remove Windows Components -> double-click Accessories and Utilities -> double-click Accessories -> check Character Map, and click OK.
