Reed Biology Outreach is currently supported in part by a grant from the Oregon Community Foundation. The focus of the outreach program is to develop an inquiry-based science curriculum with Reed biology faculty and place Reed students into local Title I elementary schools. A Free and Reduced Lunch rate of 40% or more qualifies the school for Title I funding.
Our program currently serves children in third through sixth grade classrooms, exposing these young students to hands-on science. Our program also introduces Reed students to science teaching and creates ongoing partnerships between Reed College and local public schools.
More specifically, the objectives of the program are:
- To develop and present inquiry-based science units in elementary and school classrooms.
- To have Reed College students serve as positive role-models.
- To supply classrooms and teachers with up-to-date science curriculum and equipment.
We currently work with 15 classrooms at four schools in the Portland area: Lewis, Grout, Beach, and new in fall 2007, Lincoln Park Elementary.
