How to open a catalog
All of Reed's image collections and their associated catalogs are stored
on a central server, called "Media." Before you can access
them, you need to set up Portfolio to find the server. You'll only need
to do this once.
- Launch the Portfolio application. If an "Open" dialog box
pops up, simply click cancel.
- From the File menu, choose "Connect
To Servers" and then click the Add
Server... button
- In the ensuing dialog box, put "media" in the "Server
Name" box and enter 134.10.15.72 into the "IP
Address" field. Click OK. You
should now see the server in the "Connect
To Servers" window.
You can now open the available catalogs:
- Start Portfolio and when the "open" dialog box appears, click on
the "Connect To Servers" button.
- A window will open up showing the media server. Click the little
black triangle just left of the server's name and icon. You should
see a list of the available catalogs. Simply double-click on the one
you want to view and then enter the approprate password, if requested.
After a few moments, the catalog will appear in the default view. If
you need a password, contact Fred Lifton via email or at 777-7297.
Note that you can connect to several catalogs at once by repeating the
above procedure. You should also note that depending on your internet
connection, accessing the catalogs from home will likely be slower.
Important: if you want to view a full size version
of an image (i.e., as when you double-click on a thumbnail), you need
to have the media server mounted on your desktop.
You do this by using
the Chooser (OS9) or the Go menu (OSX) to navigate
to the media server and mount the "catalogs" volume.
You don't need to open the volume or do anything at all to it.
Note that
you won't be able to mount the server from off campus, so you'll be limited
to thumbnails if you're working from home.
