Accommodations

Meeting attendees need to make their own lodging reservations by calling hotels directly. Because it is located in a residential neighborhood of Southeast Portland, there are no hotels within walking distance of Reed College. Distances within Portland, however, are not immense and public transportation is excellent (see handy Tri-Met trip planner). Reed’s Lodging Guide provides a comprehensive list of Portland area hotels. Also the Portland Visitor Association and Portland CitySearch webpages may be helpful.

For easiest access to Reed, it is recommended that you consider either downtown hotels (most exciting location, 15 minute drive or 30-minute no-transfer bus ride to Reed) or Southeast Clackamas area hotels (less expensive, 15-minute car ride to Reed) for your lodging. Portland also has a youth hostel on Hawthorne Blvd.

For the meeting, a limited number of rooms have been reserved until May 1 at the following places:

  1. The Four Points Portland Downtown Sheraton
    • Lodging: The Four Points Sheraton is in the heart of downtown Portland. Its address is 50 SW Morrison and reservation can be made at (888) 627-8263 or (503) 484-1406. Until May 1, a block of fifty rooms is set aside for us with the following rates: Single (1 person/1 Bed) $77; Double (2 People/1 Bed) $92; Double/Double (2 People/2 Beds) $92. Car parking at the hotel cost $5.50 per night. Request the "American Physical Society" when making reservations.
    • Dining: The hotel has a restaurant, which opens at 7AM, offering a hot breakfast buffet for $9.
    • Transportation: This hotel does not provide its own airport shuttle. However, you can ride the MAX line (Portland's light rail system) from the airport to within two blocks of the hotel for $1.55 (see Tri-Met trip planner at http://www.tri-met.org/index.shtml). To take the bus from this hotel to Reed, board the #19 bus at 5th & Morrison. The bus will cross the river and pass in front of Reed College on Woodstock Blvd. Allow about 30 minutes for this bus ride. Fare is $1.25.
  2. The Days Inn-Portland South
    • Lodging: The Days Inn-Portland South is in Clackamas, about a 15-minute car ride from Reed College. Its address is 9717 SE Sunnyside Rd., Clackamas, OR and reservation can be made at (800) 241-1699 or (503) 654-1699. Until May 1, a block of thirty rooms is set aside for us with the following rate: Single, Double, Triple or Quad (Two Queen Beds maximum) $62. An addition 6% Room Tax will be added to this rate. Car parking at the hotel is FREE. Request the "American Physical Society" when making reservations.Portland Streetcar
    • Dining: Room rates include a deluxe continental breakfast that begins at 6AM.
    • Transportation: The hotel has its own airport shuttle, which leaves from in front of Baggage Claim #4 at the airport. Upon arrival at the airport, call (800) 241-1699 to summon shuttle. To ride the city bus from this hotel to Reed requires about an hour and two transfers, and so is not recommended. When making reservations, ask if the hotel can use its shuttle to provide transportation to Reed.

Note: The weekend of the APS NW 2003 meeting is also the first weekend of the annual month-long Portland Rose Festival. Thus is it wise to book your hotel room as early as possible as lodging can be hard to find during the entire festival month. The Starlight Parade, the first big event of the festival, will be on the evening of May 31, which may (if you like parades) be a reason for you wanting to stay in a downtown hotel. The parade starts at 8:30 P.M. and is preceded by the 5-km Starlight Run, Registration for this race starts at 6:30 PM and the actual race starts at 8:00 PM.
