It is not easy to find happiness in ourselves, and it is not possible to find it elsewhere.

"My dear Watson," said he, "I cannot agree with those who rank modesty among the virtues. To the logician all things should be seen exactly as they are, and to underestimate one's self is as much a departure from truth as to exaggerate one's own powers."
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle |

Trophies should go to the winners. Self-esteem does not lead to success in life. Self-discipline and self-control do, and sports can help teach those.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is an analysis of classic and current theory and research on the self within the social context. We examine the complex interplay of the self with situational factors to affect intrapersonal and interpersonal outcomes. Conferences focus on the content, structure, and organization of the self; personal and social identities; implicit and explicit views of the self; motives of the self; self-protection and coping with self-uncertainty; self-regulation; the self within close relationships; and cultural models of the self. Students conduct original empirical research on the social self.
COURSE READINGS:
The readings for this course come from various journals and books. The readings include a mix of primary research articles, both classic and current studies, in addition to theoretical works. Students are expected to read and critically analyze the scheduled readings prior to each conference. Most articles have been combined into a course pack that is available for purchase at the bookstore. There is no textbook for the course. A few of the assigned readings are not included in the course pack because permission fees were too expensive. Copies of these readings are available on 2-hour reserve at the library. Please feel free to copy these articles for your own use and reference. However, please return them quickly so that others in the class will have ready access to them.
