Written Work

There are three types of written work for this course: two journal entries, a longer term paper that you will write throughout the term, and a research project with report and presentation which students will work on in groups throughout the semester. For fairness to all students, it is important that you complete all papers for this class by their deadlines. Late papers will receive lowered grades. If there is some emergency, illness, or special situation, come talk to me. Below are brief descriptions of each.

Journal Entries

(8% of overall class points). Each of you will submit 2 journal entries of 2-3 pages each (double-spaced), approximately every two weeks (during the first half of the term). There are two sets of dates; you will choose one during the first week of class.

Term paper

(40% of overall class points; 3% for paper topic, 6% for annotated bibliography and research question, 8% for peer-editing, 9% for first version of paper, 14% for final version).

Research Project, Report, & Presentation

(30% of overall class points; 14% for creation of stimulus materials, design of experiment, and data collection; 7% for write-up; 9% for presentation).

Throughout the semester, you will conduct research in small groups. Early in the semester, we will discuss possible research questions and then divide into small groups to examine them. In small groups, you will first read some background literature on the question. Next, you will create a study to test the question, deciding on the experimental design and creating the necessary stimulus materials. Research groups will then submit these studies for human subjects approval. Groups will then run the study, collecting the key data. With my assistance, your groups will analyze the data. Finally, you will write a research report as a group. Each group member will write part of the overall report, e.g., the introduction, the method. During the last few days of class, each group will present its research project to the class in a brief presentation. We will discuss the specifics of this project in more detail during the term.

  • Discuss possible research project topics on Monday, September 11th.

  • Assignment to research group & reading relevant background literature: Sept. 13th – October 2nd.

  • Research groups meet with Kathy outside of class during the week of Oct 2 – Oct 6th.

  • Research groups meet on Friday, October 27th & Friday, November 3rd to discuss stimulus materials, human subjects’ submissions, data collection, and so forth.

  • Research groups will present their research projects to the class on Monday, December 4th & Wednesday, December 6th.

  • The group research report is due on Wednesday, December 13th by 5 pm.
