Paideia in Russia, 2010

The Reed Russian department and alumni office are pleased to announce the seventh annual Paideia Russian Tour, Jan. 4-17, 2010. This year, in honor of his centenary, we will investigate the distinctive and enduring Russia of one of the world's greatest writers, Count Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910), visiting not only Moscow and St. Petersburg with their extraordinary museums, performance venues, and historical sites, and Novgorod the Great, Russia's oldest city and home of some of its most beautiful medieval architecture, but also those places that played a particular role in Tolstoy's life and work, such as his home in Moscow and Yasnaya Polyana (Clear Glade), his estate near the city of Tula.

Besides offering a carefully designed itinerary of exceptional interest and value, the tour will include lectures on Russian history, culture, and literature by distinguished Reed Russian faculty member Lena Lenček and the tour leader, former Reed Russian professor Judson Rosengrant. The tour requires no knowledge of the Russian language and is open to anyone interested in learning directly about Russia, its rich history and culture, and its place in the world. For complete information, including a detailed itinerary, costs, and other particulars, please write to Dr. Rosengrant at jrosengrant@earthlink.net or call at 503.880.9521.
