Study Abroad

The Spanish department strongly encourages majors to study abroad in one of the following college-sponsored study abroad programs. For study abroad opportunities for alumni, read more on the Fellowships and Grants page.

Programs

Argentina

CIEE Liberal Arts Program, year or semester: The Liberal Arts program, administered by the CIEE Buenos Aires, offers Reed students with at least two years (four semesters) of college-level Spanish language the opportunity to take courses at the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA), Universidad Pontificia Católica Argentina (UCA), and/or Universidad Nacional de Arte (UNA). Courses are offered in all disciplines represented in the Reed curriculum and are particularly complementary of work in the sciences, arts, literature, media, and politics.

IFSA Argentine Universities, year or semester: In collaboration with the Institute for Study Abroad-Butler University (IFSA) Reed students with at least two years (four semesters) of Spanish can create their own academic focus by mixing-and-matching courses at the following universities: Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA), Universidad del Salvador (USAL), and Universidad Torcuato Di Tella (UTDT). All classes are taught in Spanish by Argentine university professors in all disciplines represented in the Reed curriculum.

Universidad de San Andrés, year or semester: Founded in 1989 by the Scottish Community in Argentina and inspired by the pedagogical system of the liberal arts colleges, the Universidad de San Andrés (UdeSA) is a privately‐owned, not for profit institution with a complete academic offering in various fields. Its mission is to build an academic community of professors, students and alumni motivated by the search for truth and contributing to progress in Argentina and to the well‐being of its citizens. UdeSA offers Reed students with at least two years (four semesters) of college-level Spanish language a wide range of courses in the social sciences and well as the Humanities.

Spain

CIEE Program in Barcelona, year or semester: The Advanced Liberal Arts Program at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), administered by CIEE Barcelona, offers Reed students with at least two years (four semesters) of college-level Spanish language the opportunity to take direct-enrollment courses at the UB, one of the oldest universities in Spain, established in 1450, considered one of the best universities in Europe. Courses are offered in all disciplines represented in the Reed curriculum and are particularly complementary of work in the sciences, arts, literature, and politics.

CIEE Program in Seville, year or semester: The Liberal Arts and the Advanced Liberal Arts programs, administered by the CIEE Seville, offer Reed students with at least two years (four semesters) of college-level Spanish language the opportunity to take courses at the Universidad de Sevilla (US), the Universidad Pablo de Olavide (UPO), or the EUSA School of Communications. Courses are offered in all disciplines represented in the Reed curriculum and are particularly complementary of work in the sciences, arts, literature, media, and politics.

Hamilton College’s Madrid Center, year or semester: Based at the Centro Universitario de Estudios Hispánicos, this program offers students who have completed two or more years of Spanish language the opportunity to enroll in courses across the fields of arts and humanities while participating in the life of Madrid, Spain’s cultural, intellectual, and geographic center. Students also have the opportunity to enroll directly in the Madrid University system.

Middlebury School in Spain, year or semester: Under the auspices of Middlebury College, Reed students with two or more years of Spanish language can study in one of three Spanish universities in Córdoba (Universidad de Córdoba), Getafe (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid), Logroño (Universidad de la Rioja), and Madrid (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid). In addition to Spanish literature, history, and culture, courses can include work in a variety of other disciplinary areas that complement the Reed academic program.

Cuba

Sarah Lawrence in Cuba, semester: This unique opportunity is offered in conjunction with Sarah Lawrence College to Reed students with at least two years (four semesters) of college-level Spanish language. In addition to core program courses, students can take classes with Cuban students at the Universidad de la Habana and affiliate institutions. This program is ideal for students interested in the Spanish language, humanities, social sciences, and the arts.

Ecuador

San Francisco University de Quito, year or semester: By participating in the program at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), Reed students will take regular courses in Spanish with Ecuadorian students in departments including biology, literature, politics, and social sciences. Students live with Ecuadorian families in Quito. The USFQ also has an environmental and marine sciences program in the Galapagos Islands open to qualified Reed students.
