1841 Stephens

The only illustrations of Uxmal (there are no images of Kabah, Sayil, or Labná) in John L. Stephens, Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan, 2 vols. (New York: Harper & Brothers, 1841). These prints are based on research and sketches at Uxmal earlier that year. Scanned from a copy in the Reed College Library.

Stones taken from the Governor’s Palace, Uxmal and brought to New York by John Stephens in 1841. The headdress with skull (which does not belong to this human figure) was the model for Catherwood’s drawing in the print above-left.
