Columned and Piered Doorways

 Sayil, Great Palace, Left (west) portion of Facade. Looking west along mid-level facade, with vigorous, rhythmic alteration of parts and harmonious proportions.

2003. Sayil, Great Palace, Front (south) Facade, Mid-Level. Portion farthest left, with 1st double-columned doorway (cf. 1843 print at left).

 This facade is one of the most admired designs in Maya architecture, a highly original composition. The mid-level is composed of four two-column doorways and two narrow doorways leading to interior staircases, interspersed with colonnettes of spool-banded half columns.
