Spacing

Uxmal, Nunnery, West Building. Central doorway wider and more broadly spaced than other doorways.
photo Jan. 2001
Uxmal, Nunnery, North Building. Spacing beside central doorway only slightly broader than between other doorways. Broad walls with no doorways at both ends of main facade. Behind these walls are rooms entered through doorways in ends of the building.

Uxmal, Nunnery, East Building. 2 fewer doorways than on West Building facade (photo at far left), allowing central doorway to be much more broadly spaced and central rooms, front and back, to have small additional rooms at both end.

Uxmal, Governor's Palace, entire front facade. The most notable spacing is the connection-separation of the two end sections of the building from the main section by the famous recessed vaulted passageways.

Uxmal, Governor's Palace, central section of main facade. 3 central doorways tightly spaced, leading to the same very long room. Otherwise, spacing between doorways similar.

Uxmal, Nunnery, South Building, North Facade. Doorways more equally spaced than usual, with no adjustment for crowding against central archway; slightly broader walls at sides of central doorways.

Uxmal, House of the Turtles, South Facade. Unusual tight spacing of 3 doorways into central room, with no other doorways on facade. Behind the broad side walls are rooms entered through ends of the building.

Uxmal, House of the Turtles, East End. Unusual to have 3 doorways in so short an end wall, the size and spacing sensitively varied.

Sayil, Great Palace, Front (South) Facade. Character of facades on the 3 levels varied. The spacing of the much admired mid-level especially unique (see p.3).
