The Earthrise Era

These web-based exhibits were produced in the context of a class called "Whole Earths, Globalizations, World Pictures" (Hist 345) in the Fall of 2010. Each exhibit corresponds to one week's readings. Together they are a collective experiment: they comprise the class's record and interpretation of an era in which photographs of the whole Earth first saturated Western culture. The class (with some gentle prodding by the instructor) decided to call it the "Earthrise Era" in homage to the famous "Earthrise" photo that helped inaugurate it. The photo appears to show the Earth in the sky above the moon. In reality, the photograph was a bit more complicated. And its effects, explored in the exhibits below, are with us still.
